Tips on How to Help Others Quit Smoking and Start Vaping!

Do you know of any family member or friend who still smokes a regular cigarette? Do you wish they could quit or at least switch to vaping? It may or may not be easy to convince but some of the following tips might help!!

  1. Share the information that vaping is healthier than smoking.
    1. There are over 1000 chemicals in a regular cigarette.
    2. Over 300 chemicals are known to be very harmful; some are even poisonous.
    3. Electronic Cigarette doesn’t have any of those chemicals. It only has Nicotine which is needed to satisfy a smoker’s craving.
  1. Not all E-cigs are same – If somebody has tried an e-cig in the past and that had not worked for them, explain to them that all E-cigs are not same. There are many different kinds and a person may get a totally different experience in terms of taste/flavor/vapor from one e-cig to another. So they should at try few different ones before giving up. However, pushing too strongly may not work. So be gentle and logical.
  1. First few days after switching
    1. Tell them that in the first few weeks most people will experience more coughing due to the lungs expelling tar build up from past years of smoking.
    2. New Ecig vapers need to drink more fluids. A gallon of liquids is recommended per day if and when possible!
    3. Flavorful throat lozenges can help to keep mouth and throat moist since some tend to get a dry mouth.
  1. Explain different options of electronic cigarette kits to start off with.
  • Don’t ask them to try the fancy types of ecigs first. The simple Cig-A-Likes or Ego-style with clearomizers are generally less scary since they are close in shape/form to regular cigarettes.
  1. Share changes you have experienced.
  • Share how your own taste buds and your sense of smell have enhanced. Share if you feel healthier and how your clothes and hair don’t smell anymore.
  1. Ask them to try different flavors. Availability of E-cigs in different flavors offers many choices to experience. Often once the people develop a liking for any of the sweet flavors, they don’t like the traditional smoking flavor anymore.
  1. Share with people how the hand-to-mouth action is extremely helpful in the transition compared to any other quit-smoking alternatives like nicotine patches and gums.
  1. Availability of different nicotine levels in E-cigarettes is a huge plus. One can easily and gradually reduce the nicotine levels, ultimately going down to 0mg, which essentially means ‘No Smoking’
  1. Encourage them to try an electric cigarette but don’t be pushy.

Some people may not be ready for the switch. Still sharing what you have gone through and what to expect will be the biggest encouragement people may see/hear!

13 Helpful tips for your electronic cigarettes!

  1. When first using an electronic cigarette, read complete directions. Most of the e-cigarettes work in a similar way but due to a variety of options and different kinds available in the market, it is always a good idea to know more about the type of e-cig that you might have bought
  2. Charge the batteries before usage since they are not always charged when shipped (for safety reasons).
  3. Do not force a cartridge onto a battery if it seems threading is tight. Redo and attach again gently, else battery threads may get damaged.
  4. Take small drags and work up to a full drag similar to using a regular cigarette/analog. Inhaling too hard or too frequently can cause coughing and may also heat up the cartridge.
  5. Drink plenty of water/liquids up to a gallon a day to help with the transition from cigarettes to e-cigarettes. This is normal and usually subsides after a few weeks to a month. The reason is that your lungs are cleaning themselves and the coughing is helping to rid your lungs of the film/tar build up.
  6. Often the directions say to wait until the LED lights start flashing on the battery before putting on recharge. However, once you get familiar enough, it is best to recharge the battery before the LED starts flashing. Another way to tell if a battery needs charging is when the vaping/dragging/puffing gets weak and for most standard (cigalike) batteries it is 4 to 6 hrs. For larger batteries (EGO, Mods) the smoking time could be different before they should be recharged.
  7. Important: It is strongly recommended that once a week (or twice a week if you are a heavy e-cig user) clean the inside threads of the battery.
    • Lightly dip a Qtip in white rubbing alcohol clean/sweep inside of the connection thread walls. Make sure that liquid alcohol is not too much that it drips the liquid inside the battery threads.
    • Repeat step a) with a dry Qtip.
    • A toothbrush can also be used instead of a Qtip.
  8. Since the batteries have electronic circuit inside, always store the batteries under normal room temperatures, away from extreme temperatures and humidity.
  9. Do not carry e-cigarettes or batteries in tight/snug pockets like Blue Jeans. The LED tip might fall off when taking out the battery from a tight pocket.
  10. Do not carry e-cigarette batteries along with car keys, loose change, or cell phones in the same pocket/purse/jacket. This is dangerous and more so for ego type devices. It may cause a shortage/ combustion effect. Keep in separate areas when traveling.
  11. Do not leave your e-cigarette in vehicles during hot weather or extreme cold.
  12. Keep cartridges/tanks/clearomizers disconnected from batteries when not using for long periods at a time. Once opened/used, store clearomizers/tanks in upright position, unless they are empty. Laying them flat will dry out the atomizer/wicks if any ejuice still remains inside (since air can flow through them to dry them faster). Recap them after opening and when not using.
  13. At the end of the day it is best to disconnect and recap cartridges/tanks/cleaomizers and reconnect the following day before usage.

Most of all enjoy the new and better alternative to being smoke free with so many choices that is yours to make!

What Celebrities Are Vapers?

Ecigs have been a part of Hollywood culture even before they became mainstream a few years ago. The celebrities who vape range from starlets to Oscar-winners!

deppJohnny Depp introduced the electronic cigarette to the big screen in his film The Tourist, in which Depp smoked an e-cig in front of a “no smoking” sign. Depp has been a long-time smoker of tobacco cigarettes and has tried to kick the habit for some time now. While he debuted the e-cig on the big screen, Depp has also brought vaping into his personal life. He has even upgraded his electronic cigarette to a more advanced e-cig alternative.

When she takes a break from singing, Katy Perry may be KatyPerryECigspotted puffing on an e-cig. While there may not be many pictures to prove it, some sources report that she looks to be a fairly experienced e-cig user.

leonardo dicaprio 2Another celebrity who has been seen sporting an ecig is Leonardo DiCaprio. With California being one of the first states to ban smoking in most indoor spaces in 1995, celebrities like Leonardo seem to be enjoying the ability to smoke the e-cigs indoors. He was spotted puffing away on an e-cig at the 2014 Golden Globes to reportedly help calm his nerves before winning the Best Actor award in the musical/comedy category.

There have been a number of prominent female celebrities lindsay-lohan-vapingthat have been spotted using the e-cig, including Lindsay Lohan. This switch to e-cigs came after Lindsay’s father reportedly was worried about the damage she was doing to herself with tobacco cigarettes and recommended she try out the e-cigs.

sean_pennAnother celebrity you may spot “vaping” is Sean Penn. Even during interviews, Sean is not shy about breaking out his e-cig and puffing away. Sean vowed to quit his four-pack-a-day smoking habit (tobacco cigarettes) after watching his father die of lung cancer in 2001.

After being scrutinized for smoking tobacco cigarettes tooemedtv_121387 close to her children, Britney Spears can now be spotted using the e-cigs. Britney has publicly reported that it was electronic cigarettes that have allowed her to take control of her life and finally “win” her battle against the habit.

emedtv_121384Robert Pattinson has been reported to be pretty open about his effort to take care of himself and kick the habit of smoking tobacco cigarettes. In a 2012 interview, Rob pulled out his electric cigarette and explained that he was using it to help get over his habit. In 2014, he has been photographed on his film sets still puffing away on the e-cigs.

7 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Listening To Music

animal-cruelty-cat-cute-ipod-music-Favim.com-1190481. You might be more likely to keep mishearing a lyric if you find the incorrect version amusing.

study published in PLOS One last year argued that the wittier you find your misheard version, the more likely you are to keep hearing it.

(Oh, but in “Blank Space” Taylor Swift definitely does sing “Starbucks lovers”, I’m sorry you are all just wrong.)

2. We mishear lyrics because of the powerful role expectations play in our hearing.

In the 1950s, a Harper’s magazine writer coined the term “Mondegreens” for misheard lyrics, in reference to a Scottish folk song in which she heard the words “Lady Mondegreen” instead of “laid him on the green”.

This happens because the meaning we create from songs doesn’t come entirely from what we hear.

“There’s a piece of what we understand that comes from the sound that comes in our ear,” Mark Liberman, a linguist at the University of Pennsylvania, told PRI last November, but “there’s a piece of what we understand that comes from the expectations in our brain”.

3. Songs that get stuck in your head are called “earworms”.

Victoria Williamson. researcher at the University of Sheffield, has researched why a certain song gets stuck in your head. Earworms can have several triggers, she explained to the BBC in 2012.

Some are obvious: having heard the song recently and repeatedly can contribute. But so can seeing a single word that reminds you of that song (for example, Williamson says walking into a shoe shop called Faith led to George Michael’s song of the same name being stuck in her head all afternoon).

Even stress can trigger an earworm. One participant in an online survey Williamson organised got a song stuck in her head during a big exam when she was 16 – then at every stressful life event since then it reappeared, even years later.

4. The best way to get rid of an earworm might be to get a different song stuck in there.

Trying to specifically not think about a particular thing is very hard, and tends to make you think more about it that you would have otherwise. So just thinking your way out of an earworm is not going to work.

Here’s some information that might help, though: Recent thoughts are likely to come back if you aren’t actually finished with the thought, according to a paper in Applied Cognitive Psychology. This fits with a different study published in PLOS One, in which some people report that playing your earworm all the way through, either in real life or in your head, can get rid of it.

If that doesn’t work, one way to game the system is to listen to specific music you don’t mind having stuck in your head. Then at least you can choose your earworm.

5. The “mere exposure effect” makes us like certain music just because we hear it a lot.

The "mere exposure effect" makes us like certain music just because we hear it a lot.

Alice Mongkongllite / BuzzFeed

But, crucially, there’s a point at which it then really really starts to grate – and you get an inverted-U graph like the one above.

In an essay at Aeon, Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis, director of the music cognition lab at the University of Arkansas, explains why repetition makes us like music: “People seem to misattribute their increased perceptual fluency – their improved ability to process the triangle or the picture or the melody – not to the prior experience, but to some quality of the object itself.”

Basically, hearing a song you’ve heard before makes you feel clever, because your brain has already figured it out.

6. Album sales in a particular genre of music go up as the music gets simpler.

“This can be interpreted as music becoming increasingly formulaic in terms of instrumentation once commercial or mainstream success sets in,” say authors of the study that was published in PLOS One.

7. People get chills listening to all different sorts of music.

Ever got goosebumps when listening to your favourite music? It turns out that it’s not the type of music that dictates whether you’ll get chills, but how much you’re into it.

paper published in the journal Social Psychological & Personality Science found that musical preference didn’t make a difference when trying to predict whether someone is likely to get chills when listening to music.

In fact the study, which involved 196 mostly young adults from the University of North Carolina, found that “openness to experience” was the biggest predictor of who would get chills when listening to music. Openness to experience is a factor that predicts how much someone is into music, explains Williamson in a blog post about the paper. Essentially, this means that if you’re really into your music, whatever that music is, you’re likely to get the occasional shiver down your spine.
