Technology Is Changing The E-Cigarette Game!
E-Cigarette Makers Are in an Arms Race for Exotic Vapor Flavors
The landscape for e-cigarettes is quickly becoming populated with high tech gadgets designed to make the vaping experience so much more advanced than regular analog cigarettes.
Many people start using e-cigarettes as a healthier alternative to smoking, but end up with a nagging feeling that they’re vaporizing more than they ever smoked in the past. To take control of your life, you need the hard data and an elegant system that can make controlling your urges a source of enjoyment.
One such innovation is a smart vaporizer (or e-cigarette) that allows you to track and control how often you smoke via your smartphone. It’s one of the first e-cigarettes designed for the connected, social web. An example is the Kosmo, a connected e-cigarette with an associated coaching app. You can create a custom reduction program with a daily cap that decreases gradually, and social features allowing friends to hold each other accountable.
Some e-cigarette manufacturers now sell an e-cig complete with bluetooth connectivity and an app for your phone. The ecig itself monitors the number of eliquid puffs you are taking from your ecig, the amount of nicotine your taking, how much money you have saved not smoking cigarettes, how many cigarettes you would have smoked, the health benefits you should expect. This technology will allow you to set goals for yourself as you quit smoking, advise on usage, give you reminders and messages and you can even share your progress across social media to let your friends know how you well are succeeding in quitting smoking. All the information about your vaping is shown on the phone app in easy to read menus and graphs to track how you’re doing easily.
Here are a few other tech-optimized e-cigarette examples:
iHenley Smart E-cigarette
The iHenley can track vaping and nicotine intake real time, set targets and goals, receive on-going alerts and status reports. They can even track your friends progress as well. It’s easy to use, stylish and a great way to monitor eliquid and nicotine use.
SMOKIO wireless e-cigarette
The Smokio allows users to change voltage settings via the phone app instead of a fiddly button on the ecig itself, it also synchronizes your phone to your ecig automatically, even when you do not have your phone on you. The battery also lasts 7 hours in use, days in standby mode.
In addition, the app promises to grant users the ability to monitor data such as where they have used the e-cig, how often they’re smoking, and even how many real cigarettes they would have smoked based on the number of puffs taken from the vaporizer.
While there is much competition out there to have the latest and greatest tech for e-cigarette users, there are still many untapped technologies that can be applied to e-cigarettes. An example is a recent innovative patent that was awarded to SS Choice LLC which will help vapers to determine how much eliquid is still left in the tank system of their e-cigarette. Right now, it is a guessing game and having a gauge that can quickly tell an e-cigarette user when to refill their tank will certainly solve a simple yet pervasive issue.
What else does the future hold for e-cigarette fans and aficionados?
Many vapers regularly make some basic mistakes when enjoying their e-cigs. Are these high crimes? No. But they do work against the greater good of our community as a whole, and should be stopped as soon as possible.
Also, avoiding these no-nos may even improve your image among friends and coworkers.
Here are the 5 sins of new e-cig users:
Disregarding Personal Space
We’re psyched that you enjoy e-cigs. We couldn’t be happier that you no longer smell like exhaust. We encourage you to try new flavors and devices and nicotine strengths and battery designs.
But, for the love of all that’s holy, stop blowing vapor in people’s faces!
Just because you are completely comfortable with your new sense of freedom, it doesn’t mean other people feel the same. Please don’t blow plumes of vapor in small offices, elevators, clown cars or other confined spaces, unless everyone has consented.
Talking Down to Tobacco Users
Though it’s tempting to approach friends and colleagues who smoke tobacco, and condemn their habits, remember that you were there not too long ago.
If you are approached about your e-cigs, tell them what they need to get started, along with a reassuring affirmation. But do not criticize, lambast, shun or humiliate your friends who smoke.
You might think you’re doing them a favor, but in reality, it’s simply a great way to find yourself sitting alone at the bar, or wondering why you didn’t get invited over to watch the game.
Vaping In Appropriate Places
We’ve been fighting for our rights to use e-cigs in places that cigarettes aren’t allowed. And we will continue to do so. We feel e-cigs are perfect for well-ventilated offices, warehouses, outdoor spaces, among others.
But, let’s be real – there are some places where you just shouldn’t vape. Here are some examples of places you shouldn’t feel free to puff your e-cig:
Schools
Churches
Hospitals
PTA meetings
Quarterly reviews
Grand jury hearings
Gymboree
This is just a small sample, so if the list above doesn’t already give you a good idea, err on the side of caution and keep your e-cig safely in your pocket.
Sneaking A Vape in the Bathroom
New e-cig users sometimes feel uneasy about vaping in front of others. So when the need arises, they fake the urge to visit the bathroom and go puff near a window or vent fan.
This is bad practice. For starters, in most cases, this is not something you should hide. If you were a cigarette smoker and made the switch, celebrate it! Your friends and loved ones will be thrilled you made a better choice, and will likely encourage you to keep it up.
That seems a lot more uncomfortable in social settings than just telling people you enjoy e-cigarettes. If you don’t actually need to use the bathroom, stay out.
Leaving a trail behind
And finally, let’s close with something a little more serious. E-cigs are adult products, and should never be handled by children or pets. While our cartridges are safely contained when used properly, nicotine-based e-liquid is dangerous if consumed.
So, it goes without saying that you should stop leaving your e-cig cartridges around the house where others can get them. Even old, seemingly empty cartridges can pose a threat to curious hands.
For those who live in adult-only households, this is simply a courtesy issue. A trail of old e-cig cartridges, rubber caps, wrappers, etc. are just as annoying as cigarette butts. And isn’t that what we’re trying to avoid now that we’re e-cig enthusiasts?

You hear the word “mod” often associated with ecigarettes, but what are they really? It’s essentially a modified ecigarette that you modify to your own specifications.
Sometimes, they will be referred to as APV or Advanced Personal Vaporizers and they allow the user to adjust the voltage, flavors, and allow users to replace the battery. Some products even allow the users to measure and manage their vaping history.
How It Works:
Mods can come in all shapes and sizes. You can build them up with extenders so you can stack your batteries or you can shorten them. Most mods come a dial of some sort to control either, variable voltage, variable wattage, airflow, or a combination of all three. It’s very important to understand and follow the limitations of your unit. Selecting a mod that cannot handle your battery output or an atomizer that is not compatible with your variable voltage or wattage is a recipe for malfunction or worse… combustion.
Voltage/Wattage
You’re reading up on the perfect mod for you and it says “variable voltage” and then “variable wattage” – what does that even mean? When a mod has variable voltage, it means that the power output is specified to a certain level, meaning that is it very important to have the correct atomizer/ohms. And when there is variable wattage, it means that your mod will automatically change the voltage based on the atomizer. Voltage is definitely for vapers who are interested in knowing the minute ins-and-outs of their device. Wattage is a little easier to use because their less math involved. Or you can be one of those advanced vapers whose device can manipulate both.
So, you have your e-cigarette mod and are now ready to test out some new flavors, and boy, are there a lot of options out there.
But, what really is e-liquid?
There are 4 main components that are put together for your vaping experience. Nicotine: You choose the level of nicotine you want for your e-liquid. You can even choose 0 mg and have absolutely no nicotine present in your vape.
Flavoring!
Ranging from fruity, to savory to sweet, the options are endless of what flavor you would like to vape on. Propylene Glycol or Vegetable Glycerin: This dilutes the liquid, and helps create the proper “vapor” when you take a drag of your mod (FDA approved substances). Water: Another diluting component. There you have it, those are the basics. There is a lot to learn about mods, and e-liquids and it can get much more complicated, but we wanted to give you the quick basics to sound like a vaping pro!

More than almost any other topic that has captured the front-page headlines over the past 10 years is surrounded by misinformation and not quite full truths. So, in an effort to separate fact from fiction, here is our list of some of those so-called “facts” you’ve probably seen published all over the Internet and print-media:
MYTH E-cigarettes still deliver nicotine, an addictive and dangerous carcinogen:
This could hardly be further from the truth. Nicotine is not now, nor has it ever been a carcinogen. Its association with tobacco and the many carcinogens contained therein has given rise to the myth that nicotine causes cancer, but nicotine, by itself, actually promotes health. It has been shown to assist in synapse operations in the brain, thereby increasing our memory potential and other thought processes. Interestingly, it has also never been proven that nicotine, by itself, is the highly addictive substance we have always assumed it is. The key words being, by itself.
MYTH: E-cigarettes keep people addicted to cigarettes:
Well, the actual addictive qualities of nicotine are unknown so therefore this statement is founded on an unknown premise. However, the premise is immaterial to this topic, because E-cigarettes actually do the exact opposite of “keeping people addicted to cigarettes.” The long and cylindrical shape of an E-cigarette device, and the fact that there is nicotine involved, are the only things that this technology has in common with tobacco cigarettes.
There are literally hundreds of thousands (if not more) testimonials from people who have successfully used E-cigs as smoking cessation devices. Obviously there will be those who try E-cigs and return to traditional smoking. Just as there are those who chew nicotine gum and return to smoking. We don’t blame the gum, we blame the person’s lack of consistent resolve.
MYTH: E-cigarette vapor exposes other people to dangerous chemicals through second-hand inhalation:
Again, there are no “dangerous chemicals” in e-cigarette vapor. Studies of E-cigarette vapor, fumes, etc. have shown that the amounts of chemicals present in exhaled and side-stream vapors themselves are so low, they are hardly even measurable.
Additionally, vaporized glycerine/glycol is slightly heavier than tobacco smoke, and therefore does not remain airborne nearly as long as does the product of tobacco combustion. The vapor also dissipates much faster than smoke. So, with all of these facts, the threat of any e-cigarette vapor affecting anything around anyone who is actively vaping, even in an enclosed, crowded place, is nil.
MYTH-E-cigarettes are even more expensive than regular, tobacco cigs:
This is simply untrue. The economic reality is that e-cigarettes are less costly on user basis over time. Government agencies have only become interested in the regulation of e-cigarettes since the industry became a multi-billion dollar pile of potential tax revenue. Also, there are those who are simply opposed to e-cigarettes because of the material they’ve read/heard from all of the previously mentioned groups.
MYTH-E-cigarettes are a “gateway” to traditional, tobacco cigarette smoking:
Here is another statement that is actually the exact opposite of the truth. E-cigarettes are no more a gateway to tobacco use than Naloxone is to heroine. E-cigarettes are a “gateway” to healthy living without tobacco dependency, not a “gateway” to the exact addiction that people are attempting to escape with the help of E-cigarette technology. The term “gateway” gets thrown around a lot these days without any real attention being paid to what it actually means.
If you have an interest in E-cigarettes, either on your behalf or on behalf of a loved one, please take the time to consider that all of the frightening headlines floating around the Internet and news media concerning E-cigs might be just that… frightening words aimed at striking fear into the hearts of the unsuspecting. So do your research and be skeptical of news stories in general until you take the time to look into the subject yourself in order to make an informed decision, not one based on panic and dramatic presentation.
Scientists in the UK announced this week that smokers trying to quit are 60 percent more likely to report success if they switch to e-cigarettes than if they use nicotine products like patches or gum, or just plain old willpower.
The findings, one of the largest and longest in duration to date, were presented from a study of almost 6,000 smokers over five years, and in it the researchers said their results suggest e-cigarettes could play a vital and undeniable role in reducing smoking rates and thereby cutting tobacco-related deaths and its associated illnesses.
As we all know by now, tobacco smoking is also a major contributor to a variety of cardiovascular disease which is the world’s number one killer not to mention a myriad of other less deadly afflictions.
“E-cigarettes could substantially improve public health because of their widespread appeal and the huge health gains associated with stopping smoking,” said the leader of the study, Robert West of University College London’s epidemiology and public health department.
Interestingly, the research was mainly funded by the charity Cancer Research UK and was published in the journal Addiction. Mr. West’s study surveyed 5,863 smokers between 2009 and 2014 who had tried to quit without using various prescription medicines or professional help.
Dr. West stated that the results were adjusted for a range of factors that might possibly influence one’s success at quitting including the smoker’s age, nicotine dependence, previous attempts to give up smoking, and whether quitting was gradual or abrupt.
The results? The final numbers showed that 20 percent of people trying to quit with the aid of e-cigarettes reported having stopped smoking conventional tobacco cigarettes.
That 20 per cent compared with just 10.1 percent of those using over-the-counter aids such as nicotine replacement gum or patches. And of those using willpower alone, 15.4 percent had managed to stop.
Interesting, no? So in order of efficacy: E-cigarettes, willpower and then over-the-counter products.
While e-cigarettes contain nicotine which is a stimulant not thought to be particularly harmful on its own, it is addictive. However, the nicotine is delivered in a water vapor rather than in smoke from burning tobacco which contains a wide array of chemicals and preservatives.
Because switching to e-cigarettes from tobacco ones does not entail kicking the addiction to nicotine, some pundits say e-cigs could spell the end of smoking – which the World Health Organisation (WHO) calls “one of the biggest public health threats the world has ever faced”.
But critics continue to point to a lack of long-term scientific evidence to support the effectiveness and safety of e-cigarettes. They also warn that e-cigs may re-normalize smoking although this large scale study strongly suggests otherwise.
This study’s lead researchers agreed that evidence about long-term use is e-cigarettes is minimal right now but they stressed that the balance of risks had to be weighed against the overwhelming evidence of tobacco’s harms.
“It’s not clear whether long-term use of e-cigarettes carries health risks, but from what is known about the contents of the vapor these will be much less than from smoking,” he said.
A startling but perhaps not surprising fact, smoking tobacco kills half of all those who do it, according to the WHO, and has a death toll of 6 million people a year.
