Can eCigs save a relationship?

In the beginning of a relationship, both parties often tend to overlook bad habits in the person they are attracted to amidst the excitement of romance – even when that habit is smoking cigarettes. Eventually the nonsmoking half of that equation begins to feel annoyed, especially when the smoker begins to smoke their cigarettes more often after those feelings of newness start to dwindle.

It’s about this point when some nonsmokers may make the drastic decision to end the relationship, even if things are going well in all other areas. Secondhand smoke is not the only issue, although that is certainly a major reason with a higher number of people dying from exposure every year. Many nonsmokers can’t stand the smell, as it permeates everything – clothing, automobiles and everything else the smoker comes in contact with. If the couple is young and want to have children in the future, there may also be concern about the negative effects on an unborn child as well as passing on the habit to potential offspring.

Another major reason is the fact that the smoker is far more likely to die at a younger age than the nonsmoker, and could be a risk for a greater number of illnesses as well. The nonsmoker has to consider if she or he would be able to take care of the other person if something were to happen, or be able to emotionally handle being parted at a young age.

With the invention of eCigs, the smoker may be able to save his or her relationship without the emotional and physical difficulties of going through nicotine withdrawal that would happen should they decide to quit by going cold turkey.

With eCigs, nonsmokers no longer have to worry about the unhealthy effects of secondhand smoke or the nasty smell, and this handy tool has often become the saving grace for more than a few, now much happier, couples.

Top10 eCig brands

TheMagicMist has been following top 10 eCig companies closely and our research guys have been compiling data available to us. MagicMist decided to make the result of this research public.

Top 10 brands by

    1. V2
    2. Blu cigs
    3. Greensmoke
    4. Premium ecig
    5. SouthBeach
    6. Njoy
    7. Vapor4Life
    8. Mistic
    9. EverSmoke
    10. Safecig
Source: TMM research. Jul 2012 report.

Top winners and losers: The top 10 list actually has surprises for us well. When we compiled the data it made us sit up straight.

  • The top company is V2 and not blu. A few months ago both were neck to neck but after the acquisition by Lorillard blu seems to have lost some ground to V2. V2 has emerged as the clear winner – at least for now. It holds a vice grip on eCig review websites and its Groupon deal gave its marketing a solid boost.
  • The new entrants to this list are Premium eCig, Vapor 4 Life, Mistic and Eversmoke. Mistic’s ascent into top online is not surprising given that its user base is boosted by its presence in Walmart. However Premium eCig, Vapor 4 Life and EverSmoke came out of nowehere – kudos to their marketing departments.
  • By far the biggest surprise for us and for readers alike would be how SafeCig has fallen. This mighty brand of yesterday has yielded to other upstarts. It is not clear what drove this – Google’s penguin update should be partly responsible.
  • Green Smoke continues to rule the roost with its long history and base of customers.

Quit tobacco vs. harm reduction

Recently I have been reading reams of research on quitting smoking and it highlighted to me that many quitters are actually failing due to their inclination to attempt the hardest feat – quitting nicotine entirely. A possible strategy is to find a middle ground: quit tobacco but find a replacement that reduces the collateral damage that the nicotine delivery system creates.

Smokers can quit nicotine entirely, that is, quit smoking and not use any other type of nicotine. Alternatively they can get nicotine from a much less harmful source. Quitting entirely is the healthier option for most people. This is because nicotine itself may slightly increase your risk of heart attack and stroke, though not nearly as much as smoking does. But switching to a highly-reduced-risk nicotine product is almost as good as quitting entirely. Because the longer you smoke the worse it is for you, switching now may be better than quitting later.

You are probably aware of the many programs, drugs, and therapies available to help smokers quit entirely. We sincerely hope that if you are a smoker and elect to quit entirely, that you are successful. But if you are reading this, it is likely that you or someone you know has tried to quit and failed, or wants to continue using nicotine but wants to reduce the risk.

In summary you need to balance the chance you will be able to quit entirely (desirable but less realistic) vs. the benefits of finding an alternative to cigarettes (less desirable, but very realistic). TheMagicMist reminds you that nicotine – even in electronic cigarettes are an addiction. Smoking is slavery and not a sign of freedom. This is not freedom.

Will my TMM kit batteries be pre-charged?

In all cases TheMagicMist ships it batteries pre-charged. This is quite different from many other brands. Only a few brands such as SafeCig already do this.

Note however that batteries do lose their charge gradually over time(due to wind

current etc) so you will need to recharge that at your own convenience to get 100% battery charge.

Is it possible to damage my battery while charging?

It is surprising to me how many people do not know how to properly charge their battery. Yes – there is a procedure in simply charging your battery. Besides the usual precautions of using rechargeable cells e.g. not discharging all the way to zero, not charging/uncharging too frequently, etc there is one more subtle but very common way that users seem to abuse their electronic cigarette battery: they fail to screw it in all the way.

This causes a loose contact or even worse – a poor contact. What this does is wreak havoc and severe damage to your battery. When the contact is not proper it causes sparking and though the battery charges it creates intermittent surges that basically fry your battery. There is no proper way to diagnose this problem (e.g. heating of the battery is normal). So the only remedy is to actually ensure that the battery is screwed in all the way the first time.

eCigs nicotine strengths – what do they mean?

A question asked by some users is how to interpret nicotine levels in ecigs. There are several systems that companies use to describe this important detail:

  1. High-Medium-Low: Good old system that works for t-shirts as well eCigs: easy to follow but vague. For instance, v2 cigs’ High is not the same as blucigs
  2. Milligrams – from 0 mg to 36 mg and beyond.
  3. Milliliters – 0 ml to 30 ml and beyond
  4. Percentage – 0%, 1.8%, 4% etc. Mistic, for example has 1.8% strength for its cartridges.

But these are not all interchangeable. The only ones that you can translate exactly are from milligrams(mg) to percentage(%). 1.8% is the same as 18mg.

The appeal of electronic cigarette mods

In the eCig industry there are several manufacturers that focus on branding and follow a corporate approach to electronic cigarettes. They seem to aim for the everyman’s market and cater to the ordinary people who just want an alternative to smoking and do not want bother about what exactly to buy. They research a few reviews and that’s it. It is to this market that V2, blu, WhiteCloud, Cirrus, Bloog, South Beach Smoke, Mistic, etc cater to.

On the opposite end there are several manufacturers and suppliers that seem to cater to a completely different market. They provide a variety of products: paraphernalia such as refill syringes, ego-T tank batteries, an interesting and even funky range of cartomizers, etc. Admittedly your humble blogger sticks to the major (read top 20) brands and does not experiment with all these products. However from time I do get to try and look at these different mods (modifications) and variations. They usually feature one or a combination of the following:

  1. Higher liquid capacity
  2. Higher battery capacity
  3. Variable voltage (which varies the vapor output)
  4. clear cartomizer that allows user to see how much liquid is left (pretty cool actually)
  5. Cleanable atomizer – which allows the user to basically refill the cart more than 4-5 times

These mods really appeal to their relevant audience. Several of them swear by how great these mods are. But I don’t usually get hooked. For example the ego-T tank battery looks really huge to carry around. It is like carrying around an oxygen tank or something. Just too cumbersome. Also the maintenance and planning aspect of it all seems a bit arduous.

Ridculously large eCig batteries

My lifestyle is full of many hassles such as carrying chargers for my laptop, iPhone, eCig and I have a set in my office and home. But worrying about all these components that go in these mods and keeping a track of how to use them is quite challenging. I understand there is a loyal audience for these, though. For readers who are ore interested in these mods visit Stevevape.com which is the best blog in my humble opinion for this kind of thing.

Ecig flavors – the hidden cost of variety

Customers demand variety for everything you can think of:

  • Battery color
  • Cartridge color
  • Flavors (dozens of them)
  • Nicotine strength
  • Battery length

But most customers want to keep prices low. While variety is definitely desirable the additional costs very quickly add up (related to managing complexity, people, inventory, shipping errors).

So what is a customer-centric company like TheMagicMist supposed to do? Cave in to customer demands, provide variety and raise prices and gain immediate growth? Or should it resist the temptation, focus on fewer options and keep prices low for all? Tough choice to make.

How to go nine months without smoking!

After you quit smoking, the urge to start smoking again pacifies with passing time. However, as you overcome it, you grow more and more confident and hopeful that you will bid a permanent farewell to your smoking habit and live a happy, healthy and risk-free life.

As you pass the three-month benchmark, the nicotine level in your blood stream almost diminishes and all that is left is your mental association with the cigarette. Smoking is a long-term hobby and its sudden absence in your life can prove to be a gaping hole that you seem unable to fill. However, taking up alternate interests to keep you occupied during the day can make you forget about smoking and help you overcome the urge permanently.

The urge to smoking is most prevalent when you are angry, depressed or feeling low. Instead of channeling out your feelings through puffs of smoke, search for more healthier options. Talk to your friends or family, read a book or listen to some of your favorite music. Soothing long walks and meditation and yoga can also help you unwind, relax, and overcome sudden mood swings and cravings.

As time passes by, indulge in healthier and interesting activities that keep you busy and absorbed and away from feelings of loneliness and boredom. With passing time, you will be surprised with the positive change and outlook of your life.

If all else fails, remind yourself of the health benefits that you have achieved in just a small period of time by quitting smoking. Within six to nine months, you can see a significant improvement in your sinus, nasal and throat problems, with a definite reduction in coughing and shortness of breath. Fatigue and laziness decrease and your mind and senses become sharper than ever.

Savor the feelings of freedom and control as you stay smoke free and healthy for the first few months after quitting and start enjoying your new life.
