Nicotine – why is it so addictive?

Many people disregard nicotine as a substance that can be abused, because of its social acceptability and ready availability. This is why many people would take up smoking without hesitation but still refrain from doing “hard drugs” as a means of justification.

However, the health risks attached to nicotine are several and extremely dangerous. Addiction is a recognized mental illness, whether it is to nicotine or cocaine, because any foreign substance that has the power to alter your brain chemistry fulfills the prerequisites of creating addiction inside a person’s mind and body.

Nicotine is a substance secreted by the tobacco plant to ward off insects from destroying the crop. It is also used as a popular pesticide to kill insects from fields. However, the negative effects of nicotine have plagued nature as well as human beings. Nicotine pesticides have been blamed for killing honey bees and has been labeled as a super-toxin, which is three times deadlier than arsenic and twice more poisonous as rattlesnake venom.

The reason our brain is receptive to nicotine is because nicotine has chemical compounds similar to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which once fitted inside the brain, hosts a series of chemical locks which enables it to take control and steer the flow of over two hundred neuro-chemicals around the brain, dopamine being one of those core chemicals.

Dopamine is the chemical responsible for pleasure inside the brain. When smokers experience withdrawal, they are noticing shortages in the production of dopamine, which makes them irritable and frustrated, and causes craving.

A good way to wean off nicotine without going cold-turkey is by switching from traditional cigarettes to electronic cigarettes. They provide a lower amount of nicotine than what you would normally receive from a conventional cigarette, without the other harmful carcinogens that are put into creating cigarettes such as tar. This way, you can slowly taper off your nicotine consumption till you feel like you are ready to kick the habit completely, to make the process physically easier for you.

Ecigarettes are not eco-friendly! But you can do your part

Electronic cigarettes have revolutionized smoking to a considerable degree. Not only is it a healthier alternative to smoking tar-filled conventional cigarettes, it is also an environment friendly way to smoke, if you know how to make proper use of the batteries required to operate the e-cigarette. When you use these batteries properly, the “e” in e-cigarette can easily stand for “environmental”!

The E-cigarette is reusable. It gets charged through an electronic outlet or a car charger, which is why you wouldn’t need to worry about ash or disposing cigarette butts. It is meant to provide smokers with all the substance and familiarity they achieve from regular cigarettes in a more environment friendly way as it generates less waste.

Electronic cigarettes are operated by a lithium battery. It does not require any flame so there is no danger of accidentally setting things on fire. There are plenty of replacement batteries available so you do not have to go through the expense of purchasing packets and packets of cigarettes. The accessibility of the cigarettes also makes it easier for you to smoke less, as you would not have to constantly worry about where and when you will buy your next packet from.

It is essential to know how to dispose off your lithium batteries as they can damage the environment if they are just tossed away, as the lithium ion has components that damages the earth and soil and does not decompose on its own.

Therefore, when you are about to dispose off your e-cigarette which has a lithium battery make sure that the battery is drained completely. Then you should tape up the contacts with electrical tape, and then package it in a way that ensures that the contacts never come together at any point during this process.

Lithium batteries are capable of incineration, especially if you have a huge quantity of them. But if you need to incinerate your lithium batteries, you first have to label them as lithium ion battery. Incineration does not mean tossing them into your fireplace.

You need to get your lithium batteries incinerated by an approved and licensed waste treatment facility that is specialized in handling batteries with lithium ions. If you are unsure about your waste facility’s ability to handle lithium ions, you should contact them and inquire about their verification and permission to handle lithium ions to ensure the safety of the environment.

Smokeless Ecigs vs. traditional cigarettes

There has been a lot debate surrounding the effectiveness of electronic cigarettes, about whether they are worth the switch or whether they are just as damaging as regular cigarettes being a simple marketing scam.

The FDA recently shunned electronic cigarettes based on the detection of various carcinogens in the form of tobacco-specific nitrosamines in several of the nicotine cartridges, when these e-cigarettes are marketed as tobacco free products.

Subsequently, the FDA held a press conference in which it tried its best to frighten the makers and users of electronic cigarettes into abandoning the use of electronic cigarettes. The implication that went unsaid was to revert back to smoking traditional cigarettes. As a result, organizations that exist to protest sensationalized health scares jumped onto this carcinogenic scare, calling for a ban on e-cigarettes.

However, the Food and Drugs Administration and the ever-ready protest groups failed to prove three essential points that would have been crucial in their argument.

The first thing that they neglected to mention were the levels of the nitrosamines that they said were tobacco specific which they discovered in the cartridges of the electronic cigarettes. The second major flaw in their argument was their failure in testing the control product, which was a nicotine inhaler to establish a specific carcinogenic level in the electronic cigarettes.

Thirdly, they ignored the fact that tobacco-specific nitrosamine levels also exist in traditional tobacco products such as cigarettes in their report, which made an overall flimsy case for the ban, as there is no point in pushing for a ban for electronic cigarettes without asking the administration to ban regular cigarettes as well.

Further research conducted on the matter showed that electronic cigarettes are safer in scores in comparison to conventional cigarettes. Research administered by Dr. Murray Laugesen and Health New Zealand ltd. shows that the levels of toxic emissions from e-cigarettes are much less than that of regular cigarettes.

The integral part of the research was the degree of toxic emissions which were determined from the e-cigarettes. Toxic emissions were based on the levels of fifty nine priority toxicants out which absolutely ZERO were found for electronic cigarettes.

The same test conducted in regular cigarettes showed a hundred and twenty six different priority toxicants were detected in an average Marlboro and hundred different toxicants were discovered in generic brand cigarettes that were tested alongside the name-brands.

The study mentioned tested electronic cigarette vapor, instead of the content of the cartridges. This is the most relevant way to test the level of carcinogens/toxicants because the user inhales the vapor emitting from the electronic cigarettes rather than sucking on the contents of the cartridges.

Tobacco is more harmful than marijuana!

People are extremely quick to label Marijuana as a harmful drug and look down upon people who smoke marijuana as deadbeats and junkies. However these people do not even bat an eyelid at regular tobacco consumers who smoke packets and packets of cigarettes daily who are exposing themselves to dangerous diseases like bronchitis, even lung cancer every day.

Although most countries are centuries away from adapting to the same code, countries that decriminalize the use and possession of marijuana are following harm reduction reasoning which has been backed up by solid scientific research.

Even though marijuana has some negative effects, these effects are almost negligible in comparison to the negative impact sending marijuana users to jail have on the nation. These include the creation of a large underground criminal economy, the promotion of gang violence and the destruction of the lives of the users along with using billions of taxpayers’ dollars to lock up marijuana users while there are dangerous criminals being grouped into cells with them.

Considering the harmful effects tobacco on our health, we should ban cigarettes as well?

How can I keep my cartomizers/cartridges fresh?

Ecig cartridges have a tendency to dry out quickly once you open the sealing – especially if it comes with a rubber/plastic cover. If it does not come with a cover then it is probably dry already :-). Once an ecig cartridge has dried it up it creates problems including causing a burnt smell/taste.

So here are a few things you can do to extend the life of the cartridge:

  1. Keep opened cartridges in the refrigerator
  2. If you keep unopened cartridges in the refrigerator that will increase life too – especially if you are going to store it for 3-6 months or more
  3. Make sure it does not freeze – that will really spoil your cartridges
  4. After you take them out of the refrigerator allow them to warm a bit. If you don’t they will heat up too rapidly and become dry. Keep them open with cap off for 15 minutes or so.
  5. Air currents quicken the process of drying up the cartridges. So keep them in a dresser drawer or a closed box. No need to air seal it just don’t keep it on a table or similar open area.
  6. Some people prick the interior with a pin to get their vapor started. Don’t try this because this may damage the cartridge/coil.

eCigs that go Boom in the night

eCig users come in various types. There is a popular craze among vapers who try various mods (modifications). Experimentation can be fun but also has risks. Here is a great piece done by Steve Vape (very good ecig blogger who seems to focus on mods and their ever-intriguing innovations).

The problem was in the battery and are not really designed for this safety aspect. Seems the ecig user did not understand the risks behind using a modified eCig battery. Worse – it would seem that the manufacturer also did not understand the risks properly. Though the product was used as intended by the manufacturer the result was an explosion and a lawsuit. God Bless America.

Side-effects of Nicotine

Though nicotine is lesser of a health hazard than cancer causing tobacco smoke, nicotine is not healthy either. Some may be surprised that TheMagicMist sends out anti-nicotine message. TheMagicMist reminds you to quit smoking and if possible try to quit e-cigs as well.

ECigarettes and pregnancy

Today I heard the question being asked “Can I use ecigs instead of traditional cigarettes during pregnancy’. Well to you the truth I was shocked by the ignorance. Cigarettes are really really bad for pregnant moms and cause huge damage to the unborn child.

I am no doctor but can assure you that nicotine is also really bad for the fetus. It easily crosses the placenta and concentrations in the fetus can be as much as 15 percent higher than maternal levels. Nicotine concentrates in fetal blood, amniotic fluid, and breast milk. Combined, these factors can have severe consequences for unborn baby.

Though cigarettes are really really bad for you nicotine is bad too (and hence ecigs as well). We at the TheMagicMist want to remind you that any addiction is fundamentally not good. Definitely kick the habit of traditional cigarettes and if possible ecigs as well.

If you are an expectant mother then quit all forms of nicotine intake. If you are not an expecting mother but are planning on having a baby then quit the smoking/ecig habit before you go down the wonderful journey of bringing a healthy baby in this world. You owe it your baby’s well-being.
